Kiji Yomi

Still need to decide on a page layout

What is an Article?

Articles on Kiji Yomi were made as a way for users to easily create their own articles with highlighted kanji and vocabulary similar to the popular website NHK News Web Easy. I imagined it would be a feature useful for teachers wanting to make reading material for students, but decided to give everyone access to the tool in case some users find a way to make it helpful for their studies.

Check this link for an example: Test Article

Type in the kanji, the reading, and the definition in the vocabulary inputs below the article and those words will be highlighted where they match in the text upon viewing. When a reader hovers over a highlighted word, it will display the reading and definition. Words are highlighted by first looking for exact matches between the kanji and the text. If there is no kanji present for a vocabulary word, it will search for matches based on the kana textbox.

Readers with an account on Kiji Yomi will also be able to quickly add vocabulary words from these articles to their own vocabulary lists with the click of a button. My goal for the future is to source quality Japanese articles that users can use to practice their reading skills and improve their vocabulary.

I think this tool shines more as a way to help readers quickly read words comprised of difficult kanji or kanji that they don't know. However, it does highlight words based on exact matches between the article text and the vocabulary words, so maybe you'll find other creative ways to put it to us. Please note that public articles will be visible to anyone who has or comes across the link, but public articles of regular users will not be searchable on Koji Yomi.
